Monica Mockus: The Engine Behind the Little Agency That Could

As Monica Mockus progressed professionally from graphic designer to senior designer to art director, it seemed only logical to open her own creative agency. But it wasn’t only logic that helped her succeed – it was her passion, creativity, and firm commitment to bring a much-needed diverse and human-centered perspective to a male-dominated industry of pharmaceutical marketing and consulting. Spurred on by the mission to bring value to every life touched by her work, Monica quickly turned her company, mock5 design, into the “Little Agency that Could.”

Monica acquired education and training at Temple University, earning a degree in graphic design. She quickly put her know-how to use as a graphic designer and soon after, as an art director, leading high-profile campaigns for significant organizations such as the Newark Health Department, Veterans Affairs, Geisinger, and Merck.

Monica’s extensive career experience imbued her with a deep appreciation for the complexities of healthcare, shaping her ability to drive cost efficiencies while enhancing employee engagement and leverage her rare blend of operational and people skills. It also underlined her comprehensive understanding of digital and traditional media. These skills and her deep knowledge of the industry made it possible for her and her team to overcome the barriers that remained in their way.

“The biggest obstacle is the prevailing belief that only large agencies can possess a ‘big picture’ mindset,” she says. “This challenge has been significant, but it has also honed our unique strength—a diverse, human-centered perspective that sets us apart. Continually reinforcing to my team and myself that our value and capabilities extend beyond our size has been crucial. Our small size doesn’t limit our vision; rather, it enhances our agility and creativity, allowing us to deliver exceptional, insightful solutions that rival those of much larger agencies.”

Monica’s vision for mock5 design is one of extensive growth. While expanding their customer base, she also wants to focus on building the company’s sustainability while championing other diverse-certified and women-owned companies through partnership, sharing business opportunities, mentoring, and investing in their missions. Moving forward, mock5 design will be at the forefront of supporting other small businesses and help create a more inclusive industry ecosystem.

Being a part of the WEConnect International network is helping her reach these goals.

“We engage extensively with Latin American companies, and our association with WEConnect International has been instrumental in expanding our network,” she says. “Through WEConnect, we have formed strategic alliances with other small businesses across Latin America, which share our commitment to diversity and similar business objectives. This platform not only fosters connections, but also enhances our awareness of the initiatives led by women-owned companies globally.”

As Monica expands her business, she will continue to adhere to what makes her company truly exceptional—its core values of curiosity, agility, growth, transparency, and empathy, an unwavering belief that possibilities are endless, and a curated team of creatively brilliant collaborators who are also friends.
