SPARK21 PARTICIPATES IN CAMPAIGN FOR FIRST WOMAN STATUE TO BE PLACED IN PARLIAMENT SQUARE

(April 23, 2017) SPARK21, the parent charity to the First 100 Years project set up by Obelisk, a WEConnect International certified women-owned business, has participated for the last 9 months in a campaign for a first statue to a woman to be placed in Parliament Square.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who has backed the campaign from the outset, announced that Turner Prize winner Gillian Wearing has been commissioned to create the artwork. Gillian Wearing will be the first woman to create a statue for Parliament Square. The campaigning working group, which included Spark21, selected suffragist leader Millicent Fawcett to be the first female statue in the square when unveiled in 2018.

The Mayor and the Government will work in partnership to deliver the statue after the Prime Minister, Theresa May, has stepped in to support the campaign and offer to fund the statue work in full. Plans will be submitted to Westminster City Council shortly, with a view to commencing work on the piece later this year bringing to an end our involvement with the campaign for the time being.

SPARK21 are proud to have been part of the process to date and look forward to next year’s historic unveiling in Parliament Square.
