Redundancy programs rarely make headlines, but they define how employees remember an organization on the way out the door. In 2024, a leading global professional services firm went looking for a new partner to run its career transition program — one that could support employees at every level, protect the firm’s reputation during a sensitive stretch, and do it more effectively than the standardized outplacement model the industry has relied on for decades.
What the firm found was Career Money Life (CML), an Australian women-owned business that had spent years building exactly the kind of relationship that turns into an opportunity like this one.
The Challenge
Traditional outplacement programs tend to treat employees as a single category, regardless of career stage or individual goals. That model was increasingly out of step with what the professional services firm needed.
“Careers have changed. The way people find work has changed. People’s expectations have changed,” says Sandy Hutchison, CML’s CEO and founder.
The firm needed a partner that could support consultants and senior leaders alike, deliver measurable outcomes, and do it with the flexibility and personalization employees now expect, all while managing cost and protecting the firm’s employer brand during a period of large-scale organizational change.
The Connection
CML became a WEConnect International certified Women’s Business Enterprise in 2022 and spent the years that followed showing up: at events, in networking rooms, in conversations with procurement and sourcing leaders across the WEConnect International network. That groundwork is what put CML in the room when a professional services firm launched a competitive tender in late 2024.
“Being a WEConnect certified business alone would not be enough to win a large contract, but it was certainly a benefit,” Hutchison says. “It got us the exposure and the opportunity to get in front of them.”
“These things don’t happen overnight,” she adds. “You really need to put in the effort to build those relationships, to be in position when those opportunities present themselves.”
The Approach
CML’s response centered on CareerHub, a platform built around choice rather than a one-size-fits-all program. Employees complete a Career Canvas assessment, then select their own coach and draw from a marketplace of vetted service providers using a flexible credit model, whether that means an upskilling course, wellbeing support, or financial advice.
“What’s really unique about our model is we have a marketplace of diverse and wide-ranging services, and employees are enabled with a flexible credit model to choose what’s important to them,” Hutchison says.
CML also worked directly with HR leaders and managers through its Notification Intelligence framework, built around the idea that how a redundancy conversation happens shapes how successful (and how supported) an employee feels in the transition that follows.
The Results
“We were so proud and so thrilled to be part of this process, and to have that successful outcome,” Hutchison says.
Why It Matters
For the professional services firm, the partnership delivered a program that protected its employer brand while giving employees real choice in a difficult moment. For CML, it validated years of relationship-building and gave the company a flagship reference for its model at scale.
The throughline of the story is simpler than any platform feature: certification opens a door, but it’s the sustained relationships built through a network like WEConnect International that turn that open door into a contract — and, ultimately, into better outcomes for hundreds of people navigating one of the hardest moments in their working lives.
